Day One Hundred Sixty-Six of 365 – Things That Inspire Me: The Dawn

The Candle vs The Dawn!

Forty or so years ago I heard the following: “Death is merely the extinguishing of the Candle because the Dawn has come.” Now I really like that! IIt creates a sense of comfort as I ponder the end of life . . . And yet as I think on that phrase today, another application comes to mind!

Often in life, we face the death of dreams or relationships or goals or directions. And all too often when those things happen, we seek to hold onto them well beyond their usefulness thus rendering us unable to see clearly, the next thing ahead. We often find ourselves struggling to move through an almost unbearable darkness.

What if when we experience those “little deaths,” we were to think of them simply as candles by whose light we have toiled until the Dawn breaks on a new day; a new dream; a new goal; a new challenge; a new relationship? I wonder what might happen?

As difficult as it might be to acknowledge; as tough as it is to let go; as hard as it might be to look ahead . . . Maybe, just maybe the Dawn is breaking!

Peace!

I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 1994 and a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor since 2011. I received my BA in Sociology and Psychology from Hardin-Simmons University and my Master’s in Counseling from the University of North Texas.

I specialize in the field of loss/grief and have written, trained, and presented workshops on loss/grief since 1990. Helping clients learn to work toward reconciliation and integration of life losses is the basis of my work in this area.

My wife and I are both therapists and often work together with couples in our practice. We find that couples respond well to our co-therapist approach.
